The Kailis Story — A Family Legacy in Western Australia Seafood
Arriving in Western Australia in 1914 from the
Greek island of Kastellorizo, George P. Kailis brought with him a proud
seafaring and fishing heritage. By 1926, he had established G.P.
Kailis and Sons at 131 Barrack Street, Perth, quickly earning a
reputation for having "The Finest Seafood in the Sea" and
receiving the coveted Vice Regal seal of approval.
Through hard work and an unwavering commitment to quality,
George grew the business and expanded into fish processing and seafood
wholesaling in Perth. As a pioneer and innovator in the seafood industry,
he championed the use of temperature control and modern production techniques
to ensure that West Australians always had access to the best quality fresh
seafood.
Following George's passing, the business was taken over by
his son Michael who, imbued with his father's work ethic and passion, continued
to grow the operation. By the early 1960s, G.P. Kailis and Sons had
acquired A.J. Langford Pty Ltd — trading as Perth Fish Markets — the
state's only fish market.
A.J. Langford represented the catch of over 400 fishermen,
who would consign their haul to be auctioned daily to seafood wholesalers,
retailers and food service operators across Western Australia.
In the late 1970s, Michael was joined by his sons,
who carried on the tradition of growth by expanding into seafood exporting,
wholesale seafood distribution and international seafood trading. In the 1980s,
Michael's younger sons joined the business and it was renamed Kailis Bros.
Ongoing development saw Kailis Bros extend its presence to
all mainland states of Australia, supplying leading supermarkets, restaurants
and food service operators. As one of the most awarded seafood suppliers
in Australia, Kailis Bros also expanded internationally.
Today, Kailis Bros proudly showcases its long history at 101
Oxford Street, Leederville, remaining true to its heritage of providing "The
Finest Seafood in the Sea." The site is a true destination for fresh
seafood in Perth, offering fresh, value-added, smoked and marinated
seafood products to the public alongside a Seafood Diner, where
chefs simply and beautifully prepare the day's catch. With takeaway seafood
options, function rooms, and a welcoming retail fish market,
